Like animals, we humans listen and respond to leadership presence or the lack of presence through the non-verbal realms of authenticity, integrity, trust, curiosity, reliability and focus. Ultimately leadership is not governed by your position, job title or intelligence, but, more importantly, it is about your attitude, your openness to change and the way others relate to you.  It is a combination of your competency, your character, your deeper attitude for possibility and creativity, and your ability to listen to the concerns and intentions of others. Being able to read the non-verbal components that develop or break trust is essential to any advanced leader. For example, knowing how to rebuild trust when it is absent is the most effective way to get a meeting back on track rather than wasting those few precious hours conversing in circles that get nowhere.

Horses, like wild animals, listen to the non-verbal cues of communication such as mood, tone of voice, attitude, body posture and other forms of energetic cues. When you learn to become better observers of your own underlying attitudes and somatic reactions and those of others, a whole new set of practices for effective communication come to the foreground, allowing you to choose how to respond in conversations rather than simply reacting with old habituated patterns that do not forward agreement and resolution.

Horses are highly social animals that rely on trust and cooperation within their herd. Their instinct for connection is much the same as that for people.

The energy people put off is a much more significant communicator than the words they say. Learn how to trust your own intuition of the energy around you as your primary source of information, just like horses do.
